Wake me up when October ends...
Well it finally looks like summer has drifted away once again, but for me that's definitely a good thing. I really don't know where the time goes, but the ski season is back upon us so it's time for me to swing back into action.
October saw the season really kick off for me, as I attended The Metro Ski & Snowboard Show at London's Olympia Exhibition Centre. Before the show, there were murmurs around the industry that people were worried because of the dreaded credit crunch. Happily, our fears were unfounded with a record number of people attending the show. I mainly spent the duration of the show giving product support to my equipment sponsors from HEAD by giving advice on this years range of skis and boots - and boy was it busy!
However, it was not long before I was off on my travels and had my first taste of early season snow. I trained in Nuestift, Austria, with the Royal Engineers and Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME). The purpose of the trip was really to blow off the summer cobwebs and also give the two Army units an opportunity to try this year's skis. Although it was a relatively short trip, it was rewarding and exhausting all the same.
Having found my ski legs once again, the anticipation of getting back out to the Alps is quite unbearable, but not too long to wait now! All being well, I should be hitting the Alps once again in early December. Next I will be getting my head down to train for a new world record attempt in April, whilst also racing for GB in the FIS World Cup. Things are looking good for the season, but you always need to be prepared for the unexpected. Flexibility is key in this sport, and even more so in Speed Skiing!
