The season has finally got on the way with a long drive out to Hintertux for pre-season training from London. Coming out early brought mixed fortunes. High winds and poor visibility kept the mountain shut for our first couple of days but this allowed Jane, Sean and I time to tune all of our new skis and get them up to race speed.
The weather then cleared for a couple of sunny days allowing us to get back on the snow after which we were joined by the rest of the team and straight on to Super G at the start of the week. It was a tough week with bad visibility again and high winds. Going straight in to the Super G with the army was a big shout but a rare chance to get some speed training in early on in the season. Although with the poor visibility, getting used to new skis and equipment as well as a bullet ice course meant we didn't all get as much as we could have done from it. Although everybody felt like they struggled with conditions in retrospect we all coped very well.
For the 2nd week after a weekend rest we were joined by the Paralympics GB Strength, conditioning team and sports psychologist. This is all in the aim to help make us ‘The Best' and to dominate at races this year. The first couple of days were a great success, allowing the guys to really see what we do on the slopes and open their eyes to what we do meaning they can now really adapt a programme best suited to us. JK the psychologist was a great help as always sorting out the mess in our heads!
My problems started on Wednesday night while being stretched by the team doctor. The tightened ligaments in my foot gave way and resulted in me fracturing my foot! A stable hair line fracture up my tibia isn't as bad as it sounds, although the image and sound make me feel sick thinking about it. I have to wear a below the knee cast for a month but should still be able to ski in a week. After a few days I am already suffering from cabin fever which is not a good sign. To make things worse since it happened we have had over a foot of snow that I can't go and play in!
Come Back soon to find out how I get on trying to ski with my leg in plaster...
